Why Self-Reliance Is Wearing Us Out

Are you weary and anxious? There’s hope!

We live in a culture that praises the self-made, rewards the hustle, and conditions us to believe that a good life depends on how well we manage, plan, and perform. Success is measured by outcomes. Busyness is mistaken for importance. Self-reliance is celebrated as strength.

The Weight We’ve Learned to Carry

Living this way not only drains our energy and fills us with anxiety, but it also changes how we show up. When everything depends on us, we learn to protect ourselves—because failure, exposure, or loss suddenly feels unsafe. So we choose our words carefully. We shape impressions. We calculate our choices. Even our faith can start to feel like something we have to manage. Over time, we grow tired, not because we lack effort, but because we are dragging a burden we were never meant to carry.

Another Way to Live

Jesus speaks directly into this kind of weariness: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

His invitation calls us to a profoundly different way of living. Jesus does not offer rest by teaching us how to control life better, become more confident, or strengthen our resolve. He offers rest by inviting us to come to Him, to release the burden of self-reliance and learn to live in dependence on God.

In other words, it’s not about self-confidence. It’s about God-confidence. It’s about trusting Jesus not just for your life but also for your moments.

Stepping into Bold Moments

Every time we respond to Jesus’ invitation, every time we come to Him instead of carrying the weight ourselves, we step into the kind of bold faith and life that God intends for us.

Bold moments happen every time we make the radical choice to stop striving for control and start living in wholehearted dependence on God.

They spring from the small decisions we make each day when we release control, step away from self-reliance, and trust God. Over time, our repeated choices draw us closer to Him and shape a life marked by peace, freedom, and real joy.

Shifting from self-reliance to God-dependence requires both awareness and intentionality. Below are some practices to help you move from a survival mindset of control to a posture of radical trust.

  • Recognize the “Control Fallacy”: Awareness begins with understanding the exhausting illusion that you must manage every outcome.
  • Notice the Moment Anxiety Rises: Anxiety often appears when something feels at risk. Instead of pushing it down or rushing past it, pause long enough to recognize it.
  • Name What You Are Trying to Control: Ask yourself, “What outcome am I afraid to release? What am I carrying that I’m not meant to carry?”
  • Active Surrender: Moving beyond awareness requires the intentional choice to cast your worries on God. You might open your hands and release to God’s care what you’re trying to manage: “God, take what I am holding too tightly. I release it to You, knowing this was never meant for me to manage. I trust You with it. Amen.”
  • Daily Training: Faith is like a muscle that must be trained through habits like prayer and meditation on Scripture, which can actually help rewire the brain to focus on God’s promises rather than fear.

If you are weary and anxious from carrying what was never meant to rest on your shoulders, know that Jesus does not meet you with disappointment but with rest. As you loosen your grip and place your trust not in yourself but in God, you will discover that peace is not something you produce—it is something you receive. This is the gentle, radical freedom found on the other side of self-reliance.
